WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The State Department explained that mail flights would be conducted “several times a week” rather than having to go through a third country to conduct postal services.
“The United States and Cuba reached an understanding December 10 during discussions in Miami to re-establish direct postal services between the two countries through the implementation of a pilot plan for the transportation of mail,” the State Department said.
More details on the new program would be announced in the coming weeks, it added.
In December 2014, US President Barack Obama announced the United States would normalize relations with Cuba. The two countries reopened embassies in their respective capitals in July, after more than 50 years of non-engagement.
Despite the relief in tensions, the United States continues to maintain a trade embargo on Cuba mandated by the US Congress.
