The right-wing National Front (FN) party will become the first opposition party in most French regional councils despite losing the second round of regional elections, the party's leader, Marine Le Pen, said Sunday.

PARIS (Sputnik) — Earlier on Sunday, French media reported that ex-President Nicolas Sarkozy's party The Republicans won the elections in seven regions out of 13. The ruling Socialist party of President Francois Holland secured the majority of votes in five regions of the country while the National Front party lost in all regions.

"By tripling the number of regional councilors, the National Front will become the first opposition party in most of the regional councils in France, a constructive and creative opposition," Le Pen said addressing supporters of the party after elections.

According to the party leader, the election results have one more time demonstrated the current political situation in the country, dividing everyone into National Front supporters and their opponents.

After National Front ranked first in six of the country’s regions in the first round of regional elections, the Socialist party, which took the third place, said it would withdraw its candidates from two key regions in hope to divert votes from FN to a candidate from The Republicans.
