WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — US presidential candidate Donald Trump has enhanced his leading position in the race for Republican nomination and reached his highest support among potential voters, a Monmouth University poll showed on Monday.
“When Republicans and Republican-leaning voters are asked who they would support for the GOP nomination for president, Donald Trump leads the pack at 41%,” the poll stated.
US Senator Ted Cruz comes second in the poll with 14 percent, while US Senator Marco Rubio and neurosurgeon Ben Carson follow in third and fourth places at 10 percent and 9 percent respectively.
Monmouth University Polling Institute Director Patrick Murray concluded that Trump is giving to his political supporters “exactly what they want.”
The billionaire has made numerous controversial statements about Mexican and Muslim immigrants. Recently, Trump has called for a complete ban of all Muslims entering the United States. In November, he also said that Muslims were celebrating the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.
