WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The US special forces have already started supporting local groups on the ground in Syria in their fight against Daesh (the Islamic State), US President Barack Obama stated on Monday
“The special forces that I ordered to Syria began supporting local forces they pushed south, cut off supply lines and tightened the squeeze on Raqqa,” Obama said.
The US president also noted that Defense Secretary Ashton Carter will negotiate additional contributions into the fight against Daesh during his upcoming trip to the Middle East.
“I’ve asked Secretary Carter to go to the Middle East, he will depart right after this press briefing, to work with our coalition partners on securing more military contributions to this fight,” Obama said.
The United States will continue its operations against Daesh oil infrastructures, the president added.
“In recent weeks, we’ve unleashed a new wave of strikes on their [Daesh] lifeline – their oil infrastructure, destroying hundreds of their trucks, wells and refineries and we are going to keep on hammering those,” Obama said.
