NAIROBI (Sputnik) — Kenya's capital, Nairobi, is currently playing host to the WTO's four-day 10th Ministerial Conference (MC10) with the participation of economy ministers from over 160 states. The summit aims to define the course of multilateral trade relations for the coming years.
"The slow progress in concluding the Doha Round has given impetus to mega-free trade agreements. This is not doing well for an open and transparent, all inclusive multilateral trade system," Kenyatta said at the opening of the WTO MC10.
The Kenyan leader called on the WTO members to exercise flexibility in the spirit of compromise to deliver successful outcomes for the global economy and sustainable development.
The Doha Round of talks on trade liberalization has been stalled for 15 years, putting into question the ability of the WTO to function effectively and to make meaningful decisions.
