State Department spokesperson John Kirby said a new military coalition of Muslim countries announced by Saudi Arabia is consistent with US calls for a united front against terrorism.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — A new military coalition of Muslim countries announced by Saudi Arabia is consistent with US calls for a united front against terrorism, State Department spokesperson John Kirby told reporters.

"I think we need to learn a little bit more [about] the specifics here on this announcement, but it certainly is in line with what we have long been saying and urging countries in the region to do, which is coalescence around the need to deal with the terrorist threat in the region," Kirby stated on Tuesday.

The spokesperson added, "We welcome… any intensification of the effort against ISIS [Daesh]."

Saudi Arabia announced earlier the establishment of a 34-member anti-terrorism Islamic military alliance, which includes Turkey, Jordan, Egypt, Malaysia, Nigeria and Pakistan among other nations.

On Tuesday, Saudi Arabian Foreign Minister Adel Jubeir said the newly formed Islamic military coalition expects additional countries to join.

Saudi Defense Minister Mohammad bin Salman said the alliance would target "any terrorist organization, not just ISIL [Daesh]."

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters on Tuesday that Russia needs more time to analyze both the aims and the participants of the Saudi-led Islamic anti-terror coalition.
