Perhaps unsurprisingly, the recent Paris terror attacks that claimed the lives of 130 people, sparked a huge reaction online, with Google recording close to 900 million searches in the days following the attack.
Among the top questions people across the globe asked Google were: "What happened in Paris?" and "Why did ISIS [Daesh] attack Paris?"
While the Greek debt and refugee crises generated plenty of media attention in 2015, they were eclipsed on Google by events like the Nepal earthquake in April, which claimed the lives of more than 9,000 people and injured 23,000 others.
As the scourge of terrorism spread across the world this year, many also took to Google to ask: "Who are ISIS?" to gather more information about the group.
Away from global doom and gloom, sporting events also generated a lot of online interest in 2015, with the Cricket World Cup, Women's Football World Cup and the Rugby Union World Cup all among the top-trending topics throughout the course of the year.

On top of the positive sporting stories, there were also some negative ones, with the FIFA corruption scandal, which saw football's world governing body rocked by allegations of inherent and systematic corruption, triggering more than 42 million Google searches.
Celebrities and Films
Additionally, films, music and celebrities seem to be a big hit with Google users.
The annual American Academy Awards, the Oscars, sparked more than 406 million searches, while the release of the latest installment of the Star Wars films series has already sparked more than 155 million questions and queries online.
In terms of top trending searches, celebrities seemed to be top of the tree once again, with former professional basketball player and reality TV star Lamar Odom topping general Google searches when he was placed into a coma after being found unconscious in a US brothel.

Former decathlon champion and transgender spokesperson Caitlyn Jenner was another celebrity who made it high on the list, along with UFC fighting champion Rhonda Rousey.
Politicians
Not to be left out were the politicians of 2015, with many sparking widespread debate and triggering millions of Google searches worldwide.
Perhaps unsurprisingly, the controversial Donald Trump topped the list of trending politicians, while US Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders came in second.
US politicians may have dominated the list, but it seems many were interested to find out more about the new Canadian Prime Minister, with Justin Trudeau generating considerable mentions and questions among Google users.
