MOSCOW (Sputnik) — This briefing documents the plight of hundreds of refugees and asylum-seekers apprehended near Turkey’s land or sea border with the EU, who have been held in prolonged detention, denied all communication with the outside world and in some cases forcibly returned to Syria and Iraq, in violation of Turkish and international law, the Amnesty International's report reads.
The rights group recorded three cases of physical violence against refugees in camps, countless cases of ill-treatment and over 100 cases of forced deportation to Syria and Iraq in recent months.
The European Union has been struggling to cope with a massive influx of refugees, many of whom have fled conflict-torn Syria. Turkey currently hosts more Syrian refugees than any other country.
