UNITED NATIONS (Sputnik) – Two candidates for the post of the next UN secretary-general have been nominated so far, Croatian Foreign Minister Vesna Pusic and former President of the General Assembly Srgjan Kerim of Macedonia, UN General Assembly President Mogens Lykketoft announced Tuesday.
"This letter was signed a few minutes ago by Samantha Power and myself, and is now being transmitted to the members… I hope that late March, beginning of April we will have a number of meetings in the General Assembly, informal discussions, presentations of the number of candidates at that time," Lykketoft told reporters.
Until recently, the selection of the UN secretary-general has predominantly been defined by the decision of five permanent Security Council members. In 2016, countries will get the opportunity to openly interview candidates, whereas the list of candidates should be regularly shared with all 193 UN member states.
