TBILISI (Sputnik) — Tbilisi considers Russian President Vladimir Putin's suggestion that it may be possible to abolish the visa requirements for Georgian passport holders who wish to visit Russia to be an interesting and positive step, Chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee of the Parliament of Georgia Tedo Japaridze said Thursday.
Under the present system, Russian citizens can visit Georgia for up to 90 days without needing visas, however, Georgian citizens must hold a valid Russian visa to visit Russia.
During Putin's annual large press conference on Thursday, the Russian president said that Moscow was ready to abolish its visa regime with Georgia and to normalize bilateral relations, which significantly deteriorated following the 2008 military conflict in South Ossetia.
