The earliest talks between the Syrian government and a broad range of opposition groups are scheduled to begin in January 2016, according to the text of the UN draft resolution on Syria released on Friday.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The draft resolution calls for "representatives of the Syrian government and the opposition to engage in formal negotiations on a political transition process on an urgent basis, with a target of early January 2016 for the initiation of talks."

The draft reaffirmed the goals of the Vienna agreement on Syria to "bring together the broadest possible spectrum of the opposition, chosen by the Syrians."

"The only sustainable solution to the current crisis in Syria is through an inclusive and Syrian-led political process that meets the legitimate aspirations of the Syrian people," the draft resolution stated.

The proposed draft also "emphasizes the need for a ceasefire monitoring, verification and reporting mechanism [and] requests the Secretary General to report to the Security Council on options for such a mechanism that it can support, as soon as possible and no later than one month after the adoption of this resolution."
