MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif called on the US-led coalition to “join hands” with Tehran in a common effort to defeat Islamic State (ISIL or Daesh in Arabic) jihadist group and end the war in Syria in an article published Friday.
“All must join hands to put into effect an immediate end to the bloodshed and vigorously focus on promoting an inclusive intra-Syrian political process, bringing together all Syrians,” Zarif said in an opinion piece published by The Guardian newspaper.
According to Zarif, global powers must join together to win the “existential battle” against extremists.
"No one is immune from the consequences of the outcome of the existential battle that we need to fight," Zarif said.
A US-led coalition of more than 60 states has been conducting airstrikes on Daesh positions in Syria and Iraq since 2014. The campaign was not approved by the Syrian government or the UN Security Council.
An international center to help coordinate the fight against the Daesh, an organization outlawed in a number of countries including Russia, has been set up in Baghdad. The center was established in September by Russia, Iraq, Iran and Syria. Moscow launched airstrikes on Daesh positions in Syria with the support of the coordination center later in September at the request of Syrian President Bashar Assad.
