TOKYO (Sputnik) — The drill assumed that an earthquake measuring 6 points on 7-point Japanese scale happened in the area where Sendai is located, leading to a shutdown of the plant’s power sources and, as a consequence, inability to cool the reactors, Kyodo news agency reported.
About 1,200 residents within 5 kilometers (3 miles) radius from the plant were evacuated by bus and other vehicles.
The first Sendai reactor was restarted in August and returned to commercial operation in October. The second Sendai reactor entered commercial operations in mid-November.
After Fukushima, all nuclear power plants in Japan were either closed or their operations were suspended.
The Sendai Nuclear Power Plant is currently the only nuclear power plant operating in Japan.
