MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Numerous cancellations of inter-city train services due to a stoppage by Hellenic Railways Organization (OSE) happened between noon and 3 p.m. local time (10:00-13:00 GMT), the Ekathimerini news outlet reported. The OSE is protesting the Greek government’s privatization plans.
There will also be no metro service in Athens from 9 p.m. onward, according to the newspaper. The metro workers’ union SELMA reportedly said that the industrial action was being held to show its members' opposition to privatization.
The Greek economy has been badly strained for several years by a multibillion debt accumulated by previous governments.
The current bailout deal with Greece’s international lenders stipulates the privatization of public assets among other measures.
