Taliban Could Capture Afghan Town of Sangin Amid Clashes With Police

The Afghan town of Sangin in Helmand province is about to fall to the Taliban Islamic movement, media reports suggested Monday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) – Chief Commander of the Afghan Police Mohammad Dawood told the BBC that his forces were surrounded by Taliban fighters and were in urgent need of support, otherwise the town would be overrun, as they were running out of ammunition.

Last week, Deputy Governor of Helmand Province Jan Rasoulyar took to Facebook to appeal to the country’s president for military support, warning that the region was at risk of being seized by the Taliban.

Afghanistan is experiencing political and social instability, with the Taliban Islamic movement carrying out offensive on the country’s major cities, seeking to establish the rule of strict Sharia law in the country.
