FIFA Bans Blatter, Platini From Football for 8 Years
MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The Ethics Committee banned Platini, alongside FIFA President Joseph Blatter, earlier in the day, ruling that a transfer of $2.05 million from FIFA to Platini in 2011 violated several articles of the FIFA Code of Ethics. According to Platini, FIFA paid the disputed money for his work during the period 1999-2002 without a written contract while the chamber considered assertion of an oral agreement between the officials as "not convincing."

"Naturally UEFA is extremely disappointed with this decision, which nevertheless is subject to appeal," the organization said in a statement.

UEFA added that it supports Platini's right to "a due process and the opportunity to clear his name."
