The alleged assailant was identified as a religious studies student from the Afghan region of Kapisa halfway between Kabul and Jalalabad.
Qari Nasir, whose age was not provided, was alleged to have claimed in statements to authorities he had trained in a camp in Pakistan and received final instructions at a Taliban facility in the Pakistani city of Peshawar, 26 miles east of the Afghan border.
The foiled attack was said to have been planned by groups linked to Taliban leader Akhtar Mohammad Mansour, who is alleged to have close ties with Pakistan’s intelligence services.
