9 Children Killed, 15 Injured After Daesh Shells School in Northeast Syria

According to a local source, a school in northeast Syria was shelled by Daesh on Tuesday, resulting in the death of at least nine children.

DAMASCUS (Sputnik) – Daesh, also known The Islamic State terrorist organization and prohibited in several countries including Russia, have shelled a school in the city of Deir az-Zor in northeastern Syria, killing nine children and injuring another 15, a source in the mayor’s office said Tuesday.

“Terrorists fired shells at a school in the Hrabish neighborhood. The shelling occurred this morning and nine children were killed,” the source told RIA Novosti.

Syrian Prime Minister Wael Nader Halqi and his cabinet expressed condolences to the families of those killed in the shelling, and condemned the Daesh atrocities. Earlier this week, three children were killed and another two wounded by a Daesh rocket attack in the Syrian city of Aleppo.

Syria has been in a state of civil war since 2011, when mass anti-government protest against President Bashar Assad and the ruling party escalated to an open armed confrontation between government troops and allied militia on the one hand, and the Syrian opposition on the other.

Apart from fighting the rebels in the ongoing conflict, government forces have had to counter extremist groups as well, including Daesh.
