ATHENS (Sputnik) – The move to recall Panagiotis Sarris for consultations is seen as a “last step before the severance of diplomatic relations,” the Skai TV broadcaster cited diplomatic sources as saying.
Czech President Milos Zeman told Slovak media last week he favored the adoption of the euro on the first day after Greece’s departure from the Eurozone. Zeman said he was apprehensive of the move because Czech taxpayers may be required to cover Greek debts.
In a first reaction to the comments that followed, a Greek Foreign Ministry spokesman said “the Czech Republic is a member state of the European Union thanks to Greece.”
Greece assumed the EU presidency in 2003, when negotiations were finalized to expand the bloc by 10 additional countries including the Czech Republic the following year.
The 19-member Eurozone approved 86 billion euro ($94 billion at the current exchange rates) in a third bailout package after a months-long austerity standoff in August.
