The Turkish government must conduct an investigation into numerous reports of civilian deaths among Turkey’s Kurdish population as the country’s security forces have used excessive force in clashes against Kurdish groups, Human Rights Watch announced in a statement on Tuesday.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — "The Turkish government should rein in its security forces, immediately stop the abusive and disproportionate use of force and investigate the deaths and injuries caused by its operations," Human Rights Watch senior Turkey researcher Emma Sinclair-Webb said.

She maintained to ignore or cover up the plight of the Kurds "would only confirm the widely held belief… when it comes to police and military operations against Kurdish armed groups, there are no limits — there is no law."

Since July, local rights groups have recorded more than 100 civilian deaths and multiple injuries of Kurdish civilians.

Turkey's Kurdish-dominated southeast region has seen renewed hostilities between the Turkish government and the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) after July's breakdown of a two-year peace process. Once the PKK ended its month-long ceasefire in November, which the Turkish government refused to support, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan vowed to "liquidate" the PKK.

Human Rights Watch noted that Turkish security forces have "repeatedly" opened fire at ordinary people on the streets "failing to distinguish between people who were armed and those who weren’t." Moreover, Turkish authorities have denied wounded Kurds access to medical treatment.

At least 180 Turkish police officers and soldiers have been killed by Kurdish militias amid the escalating violence over the last four months.
