Having played a leading role in Syria since the beginning of its anti-terrorist campaign, Russia has already achieved significant success in finding a peaceful solution to the crisis with the use of a UN plan, journalist Hildegard von Hessen am Rhein wrote for Boulevard Voltaire.

Ever since the start of its airstrikes against Daesh (Islamic State), Russia openly declared it was willing to work together and coordinate its efforts with the US-led Western anti-terrorist coalition.

Regardless of what Western media say, Russia always stressed that its goal isn't to keep Syrian President Bashar al-Assad by any means necessary. What Moscow said was that it won't accept the overthrow of a legitimately elected Syrian leader, but if the people of Syria were to democratically elect another president then Russia would no doubt respect that choice, Boulevard Voltaire reported.

"The fact that Russia has to emphasize this fundamental principle of democracy to the West is a real shame," von Hessen am Rhein said, as cited by Boulevard Voltaire.

German Chancellorette Angela Merkel, who just a few days ago demanded that al-Assad leave his office, should be particularly embarrassed, the author said.

Why UN Peace Plan for Syria Gives Few Reasons for Optimism
Russia provided a clear plan to solve the Syrian crisis, working hard with the international community, especially the United States, to pass a UN resolution that has a chance to stop the humanitarian catastrophe in Syria and stop terrorism in its tracks.

The UN resolution isn't perfect, but right now it's the only internationally recognized document, in which all nations had the right to voice their opinion. Only with the support of the UN, a conflict of such scale like the Syrian crisis, could be solved, Boulevard Voltaire said.

Finally, the fact that Russia pushed the international community to recognize al-Nusra Front as a terrorist organization is an extremely positive step.

Von Hessen am Rhein said Russia's actions in Syria and its desire to solve the crisis by working together with different sides and interest groups should be a good lesson to learn for the US government, which is starting conflicts around the world in the interests of its arms industry.
