MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Russia sees potential in supplying liquefied natural gas (LNG) to India, according to official documents released ahead of Russian President Vladimir Putin's upcoming meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

"The cooperation between Gazprom and Indian partners in the field of trade in liquefied natural gas (LNG) is taking on a strategic nature. A perspective direction is the organization of LNG deliveries to India from the Far-Eastern LNG plant within the Sakhalin-1 project," the document reads.

A long-term agreement on LNG supplies signed between the Gazprom Group and India's GAIL in 2012 entered into force in June 2014. It provides for the delivery of 2.5 million tons a year for the period of 20 years.

Modi is currently on a two-day official visit to Russia, during which he will have talks on a wide range of economic and energy issues with the Russian president.
