Yang Xiuzhu, 69, a former senior Chinese official accused of corruption in her country, is the only one of the suspects whose identity was revealed to the public. She entered the US on a fake passport attempting to get asylum. Yang is now in custody awaiting deportation, according to the Chinese official.
The official said that the two countries would implement joint probes for the “major cases."
"We are in advanced negotiations with US judicial authorities on the five major cases, including Yang's, and will exchange information in a timely manner and offer necessary evidence to the US judicial authorities for further investigation," the official told the China Daily.
Adams confirmed that Chinese officials expressed a readiness to provide evidence to American authorities to decide “whether prosecution or expatriation of these individuals is appropriate.”
"The United States does not politicize the removal process and all cases must work their way through the immigration system," she said.
Western countries ordinarily obstruct attempts by China to repatriate criminals. As Reuters reported earlier, many high-profile Chinese criminals remain at large in countries like the US and Canada.
