"As we approach the holidays, the US Department of State reminds US citizens of our Worldwide Travel Alert, issued on November 23, and the continuing need to exercise caution during the holiday season," the State Department said.
The travel alert issued in November warned that Islamic State, also known as Daesh, but also al-Qaeda, Boko Haram and other terrorist groups continue to plan terrorist attacks in multiple regions across the globe.
According to US authorities, the likelihood of terror attacks continues as foreign nationals, fighting alongside Islamic State militants in Syria and Iraq, return home.
Americans should be particularly cautious in public venues, such as theatres, open markets, sporting events and airports, the travel warning added.
The travel alert is set to expire on February 24, 2016.
The Islamic State is a designated terror group that has claimed responsibility for the downing of a Russian airliner in Egypt in October. The Islamic State is outlawed in numerous countries, including in Russia.
