Mostly women and children, each of whom had allegedly paid $4,000 for the trip, were on board the vessel, the news outlet said. The migrants received food and medical help and will be transported to a refugee camp in the city of Hatay in southern Turkey.
The detained captain has denied that he was trying to illegally transport the group to Greece.
Europe has been beset by a refugee crisis, with hundreds of thousands of undocumented migrants fleeing their home countries to escape violence and poverty. Many of them take the West Balkan route, which crosses Greece, using the county as an entry-point to the bloc from where to travel to wealthier EU states where they intend to apply for asylum.
