Comments that Daesh is a "second-rate terrorist group" prior to its takeover of a third of Iraq and that it is "contained" before the Paris attacks show that the US' Obama is out of touch on the group's capabilities.

US President Barack Obama's comments on Daesh (also known as ISIL) show that he is hopelessly out of touch, according to the Washington Examiner, a local newspaper.

Obama earlier gave an interview to National Public Radio, in which he said that Daesh does not pose a major threat because the terrorist group is not a "huge industrial power."

"Look, the media is pursuing ratings. This is a legitimate news story. I think that, you know, it's up to the media to make a determination about how they want to cover things," Obama said.

According to the Examiner, Obama's rhetoric is out of touch with reality. Months before Daesh swept across Iraq, Obama referred to it as a "second-rate terrorist group," while the deadly Paris attacks came hours after Obama claimed that the group was "contained."

According to the Examiner, this shows that Obama has a gap between his rhetoric,  in which he continues to officially call the group weak, and reality, as Daesh has continued to gain strength and launch increasingly daring attacks.
