India is ready to restore its previous volumes of oil imports from Iran as soon as the sanctions are fully lifted from Tehran, the head of Iran's energy working group delegation to New Delhi said on Monday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — During the weekend talks of the Iran-India economic commission in New Delhi, Iran and India discussed cooperation in energy, urban development, information exchange and infrastructure modernization.

"Before the sanctions imposed on Iran, Tehran was meeting 16 percent of New Delhi's oil needs," Marziye Riahi told the IRNA news agency.

She recalled that amid the international sanctions against Iran the figure dropped to 6 percent.

For years, the West had accused Tehran of hiding nuclear weapon development under the guise of a peaceful nuclear energy program. Anti-Iran sanctions banned sales of Iranian oil to the European Union and some parts of Asia.

On July 14, Iran and six world powers, comprising Russia, the United States, China, the United Kingdom, France and Germany, reached an historic agreement in the Austrian capital Vienna obliging Tehran to guarantee the peaceful nature of its nuclear activities in exchange for sanctions relief.

In August, Tehran signed a package of contracts with its traditional clients for the delivery of Iranian oil in 2015, namely China, India, South Korea, Turkey and Japan.

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani believes that the sanctions will lifted by early 2016.
