A local Saudi newspaper, Okaz, recently reported that Saudi authorities were about to execute 50 people in just one day. That infuriated Arjun Sethi, a professor at the Georgetown University Law Center, who wrote an article for Al Jazeera America, condemning the Saudi government for its terrible human rights record.
After Sethi's piece, "Saudi Arabia Uses Terrorism As An Excuse for Human Rights Abuses" was published the corporate headquarters of the Al Jazeera Media Network in Qatar blocked the article outside of the United States, AnonHQ said.
"Al Jazeera America told local press that the network didn't want to offend Saudi Arabia or any other State ally," the Intercept reported.
"After hearing from users from different locations across the world that several of our web pages were unavailable, we have begun investigating what the source of the problem may be and we hope to have it resolved shortly," an Al Jazeera statement said, as cited by AnonHQ.
However, according to the Okaz newspaper, a director at Al Jazeera apologized for the article and promised to remove it, AnonHQ reported.
At the same time, Sethi, the author of the article, said he has come under personal attacks on Twitter from pro-Saudi accounts for publishing the story. The professor isn't intimidated, however, and said he'd continue to speak the truth and seek justice for the oppressed, AnonHQ said.
Al Jazeera America is owned by the Al Jazeera Media Network group with its headquarters in Qatar. The media group is partially funded by the ruling family of Qatar, who are close allies of the Saudi royal family.
