Approximately 8,000 Cubans have been staying in Costa Rica since mid-November, the country’s immigration agencies claim. The same month, the Nicaraguan authorities refused to let migrants cross their state.
The Cubans tried to burst through the Pena Blancas border crossing and even managed to get into Nicaragua, having walked about 10 kilometers into the territory of the country, but local police officers stopped them. As a result, the Cubans were returned back to Costa Rica.
