On November 21, the Belgian government announced the highest threat level in the capital. Throughout the lockdown many restaurants, museums, shops and schools were closed, the entire metro system was shut, and people were told to avoid crowded places. As a result of the measure, two suspects were arrested on charges of plotting an attack on New Year's Eve.
Police spokesman Johan Berckman explained that during the lockdown, the Ganshoren station was temporarily transformed into a makeshift barracks for soldiers patrolling the streets.
"I can confirm that 15 to 20 soldiers were sleeping at the police station to save them making the journey back to their barracks," Berckman said, as cited by Mirror.
Belgian police chiefs have launched an inquiry into the alleged incident.
The Belgian army has been criticized over ill conduct by its soldiers during the anti-terror operation after a uniformed soldier was pictured with a shopping bag while on patrol in Brussels.
