MOSCOW (Sputnik) – Iraqi Prime Minister Haidar Abadi has arrived in the country’s western city of Ramadi after it was liberated from Daesh (Islamic State).
“The head of the Council of Ministers, Commander-in-Chief Haidar Abadi is visiting the liberated city of Ramadi,” the prime minister’s official social network page said.
On Monday, Iraq's army announced that it had regained full control over the strategically important Anbar province's capital Ramadi.
The Iraqi army launched an anti-Daesh offensive across Anbar on December 22. The main aim of the offensive was to liberate Ramadi, which has been occupied by Daesh militants since May.
Daesh has seized large areas in Syria and Iraq and declared a caliphate there under the rule of Sharia law. According to Iraqi intelligence, between 250 and 300 radical Islamist militants had been holding central districts of Ramadi.
