MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Saudi Arabia and Turkey have agreed to set up a strategic cooperation council to strengthen bilateral ties, Saudi Foreign Minister Adel Jubeir said on Tuesday.
Saudi King Salman on Monday met with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who is on a visit to Riyadh.
"King Salman discussed with Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan the creation of a strategic council. The strategic council will allow for a quality leap in Saudi-Turkey relations," Jubeir told a news conference in Riyadh as quoted by Al Arabiya news channel.
The Turkish president and the Saudi king also discussed the Syrian reconciliation and the outcomes of the recent meeting of the so-called moderate Syrian opposition, as both countries consider Syrian President Bashar Assad should step down.
Erdogan's trip to Riyadh took place shortly after Saudi Arabia announced the establishment of an Islamic anti-terror coalition of 34 countries, which includes Turkey.
The Islamic coalition, comprising Lebanon, Egypt, Malaysia, Nigeria and Pakistan among other nations, was created "to counteract terrorism, which became a threat to the interests of the Islamic nation," according to a statement by Riyadh.
