KIEV (Sputnik) — Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko has signed legislation allowing the country's government to introduce sanctions against Russia in response to Moscow's food import embargo and its suspension of a free trade zone between the countries, Ukraine's parliament said Tuesday on its official website.
The bill, which was approved by Ukrainian lawmakers last week, "was returned with the president's signature," the parliament said.
Moscow warned earlier it would suspend a free trade deal with Ukraine on January 1 to coincide with the coming into being of the EU-Ukraine free trade zone.
Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev said that Moscow would also impose tariffs on imports from Ukraine and curbs on Ukrainian foods to protect the market from being flooded by tariff-free EU goods.
