WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The US Department of State issued a travel warning for US citizens in Tunisia on Tuesday, due to recent terrorist attacks on tourist sites and Tunisian security forces.
"Travelers should monitor local events, report suspicious activity to the local police, and take appropriate steps to bolster personal security," the travel warning said.
The travel alert coincides with the Tunisian government’s extension of a state of emergency through February 2016.
Terrorist groups including Ansar al-Sharia and the Islamic State, also known as Daesh, have carried out multiple attacks in Tunisia in the past year.
The Daesh claimed responsibility for the March and June terrorist attacks on the Bardo Museum in Tunis and the Bellevue Park hotels near Sousse, both popular tourist destinations.
