WASHINGTON (Sputnik), Leandra Bernstein — The leaked information of more than 191 million US voters could be aggregated with other personal details in targeted, criminal cyberattacks, privacy advocate and head of DataBreaches.net told Sputnik.
"You’ve now got a national directory of personal info — including date of birth — that could be misused. There's also a risk of aggregating these data with other databases to target us even more for criminal purposes," the advocate, who wished to be identified as Dissent, said on Tuesday.
On Monday, DataBreaches.net and independent computer security researcher Chris Vickery reported that the misconfigured database leaked the personal information of more than 191 million US voters.
The advocate also warned that the information contained in the database "could be used for sophisticated and targeted phishing" by criminals posing as a political party the voter is affiliated with.
DataBreaches.net is unaware of the cause of the voter database leak, but the site has since been secured.
"The data were from 2014 which was not a general election year, so it was likely not from any presidential campaign," the privacy advocate said.
