The ineptitude of Afghanistan’s US-trained military leaders are to blame for recently losing ground to the Taliban in the country’s southern province of Helmand, Afghan security personnel said on Wednesday.

While the United States and others are busy fighting Daesh (Islamic State) and the Taliban, another terrorist group, al-Qaeda, is currently re-emerging in Afghanistan, Eric Schmitt and David Sanger wrote for the New York Times. - Sputnik International

While Fighting Daesh, US Misses Rise of al-Qaeda in Afghanistan
WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — Earlier on Wednesday, US Commander in Afghanistan General John Campbell said he may seek to boost the US military presence in the crisis-torn country to ensure the Pentagon can effectively train Afghan security forces to fight the Taliban.

"The [security] personnel has a strong morale… this is the weakness of our commanders of military units," Public Order Police commander Shinkai Qarabaghi told Afghanistan’s Tolo News about losses in Helmand. "Such people should be punished."

Other Afghan servicemen, the report added, cited negligence by senior command as the reason why the Taliban were able to take control of Helmand’s Sangin district.

Last week, the United Kingdom deployed a group of military personnel to Helmand after Afghan government forces recently suffered a defeat to the Taliban. The US Defense Department said that the purpose of the deployment is to train local security forces.
