WASHINGTON (Sputnik), Leandra Bernstein — On Monday, DataBreaches.net and independent security researcher Chris Vickery reported that a misconfigured database leaked the voter registration information of more than 191 million Americans.
"The real issue and the real story is… that there is this database with information about essentially all voters in the United States, and no one seems to know even whose it is," Callas said.
The information contained in the voter registration database is primarily public, Callas said, arguing the security risk is "essentially nil." He added that the "only added privacy threat is [the data is] aggregated in one place."
The voter information was removed from the public domain on Tuesday, but the owner of that information has not yet been identified, according to DataBreaches.net. According to US statistics, there are approximately 215 million Americans eligible to register to vote.
