The year started with good news after Kurdish militia groups defeated Daesh (Islamic State) militants in Kobani in January and pushed the terror group out of the city in Northern Syria. The event was significant because it was Daesh's first major defeat. In other words, by breaking the siege of Kobani, the Kurds showed the world that Daesh could and should be defeated.

Some 12 million people participated in the "Immortal Regiment" march across Russia on May 9 to commemorate the 70th anniversary of victory over the Nazi Germany. Russia Performs First Face Transplant Surgery
Russian doctors performed a successful face transplant surgery on a Russian soldier. Eighteen hour of surgery was performed at the Kirov Military Medical Academy in St. Petersburg and made Russia only the eighth country to carry out an operation of this kind. Thanks to the surgery the man is now able to live a normal life.
Girl Who Magically Survived Fire Receives Over 700,000 Christmas Cards
Sa'fyre Terry, an 8-year-old girl who survived a fire that killed her family and burned three-fourths of her body, received over 700,000 cards this Christmas. Earlier this month, the girl said that one of the things that she wanted for Christmas was to receive Christmas cards. Well, her wish was granted. The US Postal Service said that Sa'fyre received more than 700,000 letters and Christmas cards in less than three weeks.

Quincy Kroner is a big fan of garbage trucks. Every Friday when a garbage truck comes near his parents' house he runs to the window and watches them work. The men who drive the truck became aware of their 2-year-old fan and did some extra work in front of his house, like honking and waving at the child. One day in March, Quincy's heroes, two garbage men, gave the little boy a present — a toy garbage truck. When his big day arrived, Quincy asked his heroes to take a picture with him and they of course agreed. However when the moment of truth arrived Quincy couldn't control his emotions and the tears of joy began to flow.
