"It is with great sadness that Statoil and COSL have received confirmed information from the police that one person has died as a result of the breaking wave that hit the drilling rig COSL Innovator today," the Wednesday statement said, adding that "two other people were injured."
The two injured individuals were carried to land by helicopter and received medical treatment ashore after the incident, according to the statement.
"The rig is now heading to shore under its own power, while evacuation takes place," Statoil said, adding that the COSL Innovator rig had been taken off the well before the incident amid bad weather.
The COSL Innovator rig is under contract to Statoil at the Troll field in the North Sea, west of the Norwegian city of Bergen.
According to Statoil, the Wednesday incident caused damage to the rig’s accommodation module.
