MOSCOW (Sputnik) – Algerian army and security forces' personnel killed a total of 157 terrorists, including 10 terror groups’ leaders, the country’s Defense Ministry said Saturday.

"2015 was marked by unprecedented results in the fight against terrorism, smuggling, illegal arms trade, drug trafficking and organized crime. A large number of terrorists have been neutralized and arrested. Numerous terrorist networks and secret shelters have been eliminated," the ministry said in a statement.

Terrorists’ weapon arsenals, which included hundreds of machine guns, submachine guns, rifles, grenade launchers, rifles with telescopic sights, and over 1,200 explosive devices, namely homemade bombs, grenades and missiles, were intercepted as a result of coordinated action and joint operations of the army and the security forces of Algeria.

In 1990s, Algeria fought a vicious counter-insurgency war against religious extremists. The period, known as the "black decade," left about 200,000 Algerian dead.

In the recent years, the country enjoyed a period of relative stability due to President Abdelaziz Bouteflika’s national reconciliation policy.
