MOSCOW (Sputnik) – The suspected gunmen in the murder of a newly elected mayor of a central Mexican city, who was shot down one day after assuming office, have been detained, the local state governor has announced.
Gisela Mota was gunned down in front of her residence in the town of Temixco early Saturday, 24 hours after being sworn in as mayor of the fourth largest city in the state of Morelos.
"The alleged perpetrators of the attack have already been arrested," Morelos Governor Graco Ramirez announced on his Twitter account late Saturday.
Local media said two suspected assailants were detained and two others have been killed in pursuit following Mota’s murder.
The newly elected mayor’s death at age 33 was attributed to organized crime amid clashes between state politicians over security.
