MOSCOW (Sputnik) – Stephen Hewett-Brown was attending a party in an apartment building on the Lower East Side on Thursday and was pinned between the ceiling of the cab and the third floor when the elevator came crashing down after a sudden stop, The New York Times said on Friday.
The 25-year-old pushed a woman out of the elevator right after it stopped and was the only person left inside when the elevator crashed down, according to the newspaper.
Police received a 911 call from the building residents right before midnight. In the early hours of Friday Hewett-Brown was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.
The building where the accident occurred is home to low-income immigrant families, according to The New York Times. Its residents had repeatedly filed complaints over the malfunctioning elevator with the Department of Buildings.
