MOSCOW (Sputnik) – The first stage of the Dakar rally in Argentina was cancelled Sunday due to security concerns amid poor weather conditions, the rally’s authorities said in a statement
"Race director Etienne Lavigne has just confirmed that today's stage has been cancelled," the statement said.
According to the statement, the cancellation was due to the fact that the helicopters needed to guarantee the safety of participants were unable to fly due to poor weather conditions.
On Saturday, during the prologue of the Dakar Rally, a speeding car careened off the track and crashed into spectators, leaving at least 10 people injured.
