BRUSSELS (Sputnik) – Saudi Arabia cut off diplomatic ties with Iran on Sunday following an attack on its embassy in Tehran and the consulate in the northeastern city of Mashhad after Saudi authorities executed a prominent Shiite cleric.
"We are continuing to follow the situation [between Iran and Saudi Arabia] closely and contacts are ongoing at all levels with our partners," Catherine Ray told reporters.
Ray also said that the European Union expected all regional powers to act responsibly in the volatile situation.
On Sunday, Mogherini urged the sides of the conflict to avoid escalation of sectarian tensions, adding that security and stability in the region cannot be endangered.
