MOSCOW (Sputnik) – Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi discussed methods over the telephone of de-escalating the tension in the Persian Gulf saying that the conflicts that have arisen between those governments must be alleviated through dialogue, the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement Tuesday.
“The parties exchanged opinions on the methods of de-escalating the tension that has arisen in the last few days in the Persian Gulf. Confidence was expressed that these contradictions must be overcome through dialogue,” the Foreign Ministry said.
Marsudi emphasized that Indonesia as the largest Muslim government is interested in cooperation with Russia “with the goal of not allowing a split in the Islamic world.”
Sudan and Bahrain cut diplomatic ties with Iran, while the United Arab Emirates said it would scale back its diplomatic relations with Tehran. Kuwait recalled its ambassador to Iran earlier in the day, at the same time, Iran's ambassador to Kuwait received a protest note following the attacks on Saudi diplomatic missions.
