Hillary Clinton said the US and the UN should introduce additional sanctions against North Korea in response to the alleged hydrogen bomb test by Pyongyang.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The United States, along with international partners, should increase pressure on North Korea and introduce a new round of sanctions against Pyongyang after an apparent nuclear test, US presidential hopeful Hillary Clinton said in a statement on Wednesday.

"The United States and our partners, including the UN Security Council, need to immediately impose additional sanctions against North Korea," Clinton stated.

The former US secretary of state added that the Chinese government should be "more assertive" in deterring North Korean activities.

"North Korea must have no doubt that we will take whatever steps are necessary to defend ourselves and our treaty allies, South Korea and Japan," Clinton concluded.

Earlier in the day, North Korea claimed it had carried out its first test of a hydrogen bomb. The move triggered deep concern from the international community over the possible threat to both regional and global peace and security.
