The United States Air Force may soon send radiation 'sniffer' jets to the Korean Peninsula to determine whether reports of North Korea’s alleged hydrogen bomb test are true, American military officials told US media on Thursday.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The US military official told CNN that such a nuclear test would emit distinctive element samples into the air that could be analyzed. The official also said that Washington has ground stations to collect samples and verify Pyongyang’s claim.

Eye in the Sky: US Spy Plane Reportedly Monitored N Korea’s H-Bomb Test
On Wednesday, North Korea claimed it had successfully tested a hydrogen bomb. Based on seismic data however, many analysts speculated that the weapon was a boosted-fission bomb, in which a radioactive form of hydrogen is placed in the core of an atomic bomb.

The Obama Administration said it believed North Korea had in fact tested a nuclear weapon, but were skeptical of Pyongyang’s claim that the weapon was a hydrogen bomb and stressed the need to conduct further analysis to make any final determinations.

On Thursday, the preparatory committee of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization plans to hold a special meeting to discuss North Korea’s alleged hydrogen bomb testing, after the UN National Security Council held an emergency meeting on the incident a day earlier at Japan’s request.
