WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The US-led coalition against Daesh (Islamic State) conducted 26 airstrikes in Syria and Iraq in order to stop further Daesh territory occupation, the Defense Department said in a press release on Friday.
"In Syria, coalition military forces conducted three strikes," the release stated. "In Iraq, coalition military forces conducted 22 strikes. Coalition military forces conducted one strike in Iraq."
In Syria, airstrikes eliminated four Daesh fighting positions and three staging areas. Likewise in Iraq, airstrikes destroyed 11 Daesh tactical units, 30 fighting positions, 13 machine guns, four assembly areas, and two command and control nodes.
The US-led coalition of 65 nations has been carrying out airstrikes against Daesh, which is outlawed in Russia, in Iraq since August 2014 and in Syria since September 2014, but without the approval of the Syrian government or the UN Security Council.
