UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein called on the Yemeni government on Friday to turn over its move to declare a UN official persona non-grata.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — On Thursday, Yemen accused George Abu Zulof, the head of the UN human rights office in Yemen, of bias and not providing a complete assessment of the human rights situation in the country and expelled him from the country.

The decision is "unwarranted, counter-productive and damaging to the reputation of the Government and its coalition partners," the UN right chief said in a statement.

"The Government’s decision appears to be based on a number of misunderstandings, both of what my Office has been saying publicly, and of what the role of the UN is in a conflict situation," the official stressed.

Since 2014, Yemen has been engulfed in a military conflict between the government headed by Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi and Shiite Houthi rebels, the country’s main opposition force.

An international coalition led by Saudi Arabia has been launching airstrikes in Yemen at the request of president Hadi since March 2014, in an attempt to push Houthis out of areas they have come to control.
