The perpetrators of the attacks on women in Cologne reportedly were small groups of men mostly of Arab and North African origin. The German Interior Ministry announced on Friday that 29 of 32 identified assailants were migrants.

The events on New Year’s Eve have caused rallies by the anti-Islamic movement Pegida and its rival "Cologne against Right-wingers," which were dispersed by police earlier on Saturday. Pegida called on the government to abandon its "open-door" migrant policies, which have led to over a million refugees from the Middle East and North Africa to arrive in Germany in 2015.
